New CD Celebrates St. Lawrence University Organ
CANTON - Sondra Goldsmith Proctor, St. Lawrence University's musician-in-residence, has recorded a CD of music performed on the organ in Gunnison Memorial Chapel on campus, and will perform in two recitals during Family Weekend to celebrate its release.
Proctor performs a monthly noon-hour recital on the chapel organ during the academic year and the first for this year will be on Friday, September 21, beginning at 12:15 p.m. with "Music for High Holy Days." It features organ music of Herman Berlinski, choral music by Janowski and Sargon and familiar melodies arranged by Samuel Adler. She will be joined by the Ad Hoc Singers for the recital and audience members are welcome to eat their lunch while they listen.
On Saturday, September 22, at 1:45 p.m. in the chapel, Proctor will perform selections from the CD, recorded in June. In addition to "Alma Mater," composed by Class of 1924 graduate J. Kimball Gannon (who also wrote the popular holiday standard "I'll Be Home For Christmas"), the recording includes selections by Bach, Berlinski, Brahms and Franck. Following the recital, Goldsmith Proctor will sign copies of the CD in the Brewer Bookstore, beginning at 3 p.m. The CD will be available for sale in the bookstore.
The Estey Organ was a gift from Charles A. Coffin, the first president of General Electric corporation.
Proctor, a well-known and respected organist and choral conductor in the eastern United States and especially in the Washington, DC, area, was, for nearly three decades, the director of music and arts and organist for Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ in Washington. She has played recitals in many venues in the eastern United States.
