A List 9/27/99 SLU'S OWEN D. YOUNG LIBRARY TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE CANTON -- An open house to celebrate completion of the renovation of Owen D. Young Library at St. Lawrence University will be held on Thursday, October 7, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Tours of the new facility, music from the Phil Neisser Jazz Trio and refreshments will all be part of the event. In addition, from 4 to 5 p.m., there will be a book- and poster-signing event with Nathan Farb, a nationally recognized photographer whose works are featured in the refurbished library. Farb, known especially for his photographs of Adirondack scenes, received an honorary degree from St. Lawrence this year. Work on the library renovation began in May of 1998 and was completed this month. The $6 million project included the complete renovation of the library to meet the needs of the 21st century. Included are: - The addition of 200 seats in locations that are also "wired" for network and Internet access. The addition makes seating available in Owen D. Young and Launders Libraries to roughly one-half of the student body at any given time. - Creation of more individual and group study spaces and classrooms, all networked - An expanded and improved Writing Center, with electronic access - Reconfiguration of the 24-hour study area, to provide better study conditions and access to the electronic databases "after hours" - Combining of Special Collections and Archives into an enlarged and more accessible area immediately viewable from the main entrance to the library - Integration of the Interlibrary Loan and Circulation functions near the main entrance, creating a single service point for these services - Relocation and integration of the U.S. and Canadian government documents area to the lower level, providing more access and a more "user-friendly" environment - Installation of compact storage technology, providing space for 10 to 15 years of collection growth, including books, journals and government documents-30- Back To News Releases
