St. Lawrence Competing With Other Colleges To Reduce Electricity Usage

CANTON - St. Lawrence University students are competing against four other New York State schools in a test far removed from the playing fields. The five are engaged in the New York Negawatt Challenge, an electricity reduction competition for campus residence halls, a northeast component of Campus Conservation Nationals.

From February 13 through March 5, all St. Lawrence student residences will compete against rivals Skidmore, Hamilton, Colgate and Hobart and William Smith to see which school can reduce electricity use by the greatest percentage.

A dashboard that includes tips on reducing electricity usage is used for tracking. It is available online, and via a display panel in the Sullivan Student Center on campus, where students plan an awareness campaign about the competition.

The Campus Conservation Nationals is the first nationwide electricity and water reduction competition on college and university campuses. In its second year, CCN gives a common voice and motivation to thousands of students, all working together to reduce consumption and mitigate the impacts of climate change. The New York Negawatt Challenge focuses solely on electricity.
