CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN DANCE GROUP SETS SLU PERFORMANCE
CANTON - The Montreal-based contemporary African dance company Compagnie Danse
Nyata-Nyata will perform at St. Lawrence University on Thursday, October 12, at
8 p.m. in Gulick Theater; the event is open to the public free of charge.
Workshops on rhythms, posture and alignment in African dance will also be conducted,
on Friday, October 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. and Saturday, October 14, from 11 a.m. to
1 p.m. in Noble Center 107. Space may be available to the community in the workshops;
registration is required, by e-mailing jsheridan@stlawu.edu.
The company was founded in 1986 by choreographer and performer Zab Maboungou
to explore and develop the particular aesthetics of African dance as it relates to
music, poetry, mythology, ritual and the related arts, bringing forth essential
aspects which link the ancestral with the contemporary. This process includes
choreographic creation, dance performance, musical composition, writings,
conferences, teaching and promotion in a local, national and international
context.
