SILENT 'NOSFERATU' WITH LIVE ORGAN MUSIC AT SLU
CANTON - A screening of the 1922 silent horror classic Nosferatu, with live organ
accompaniment by Walt Strony, will take place in Gunnison Memorial Chapel at
St. Lawrence University on Monday, October 31, at 8 p.m. The event is open to the
public, free of charge.
Nosferatu was made in Germany, directed by F.W. Murnau and starring Max Schreck.
It is considered to be the first vampire film. Although it receives no credit in
the film, the story is based on the Bram Stoker novel Dracula. A 1979 version of
the same story starred Klaus Kinski; the 2000 film Shadow of the Vampire tells
the story of the making of the 1922 version, and stars John Malkovich as director
Murnau.
Strony has performed hundreds of concerts from coast to coast in the United States
as well as in Japan, Australia, England and Canada. In addition, he has performed
at many conventions of the American Theatre Organ Society and the American Guild
of Organists. He is the only living theatre organist to have been twice voted
"Organist of the Year" by the American Theatre Organ Society, in 1991 and 1993.
Strony has performed with the Calgary Symphony (1999) and with the Allentown
Symphony (2003).
