CANTON – The Third Annual North Country Symposium on Education, Environment
and Economic Vitality will take place at St. Lawrence University on Thursday,
April 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Eben Holden Conference Center.
The theme of this year's event is "Strengthening Local Economies Through
Collaboration Among Community and Educational Institutions."
	Presentations include:
	- "The Partnership for Community Development: A Model for Collaboration
between Colleges and Communities," by Jill Tiefenthaler, Eve Ann Shwartz
and James Leach, of Hamilton, NY, and Colgate University's Upstate Institute.
The partnership model in Hamilton is a working demonstration of
community-college cooperation.
	- "An Inside View: Collaboration for St. Lawrence County," with the
presidents of the colleges in Canton and Potsdam, Anthony Collins, Clarkson
University; John Fallon III, SUNY Potsdam; Joseph Kennedy, SUNY Canton; and

James Waterson, coordinator of St. Lawrence University's graduate program in
Educational Leadership, on the Inaugural Youth Symposium; St. Lawrence County
Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Karen St. Hilaire on the e-Bay project;
Sue Rau, of North Country Grown; and Tom DeRosa, owner/operator of First Crush
Café.
The Youth Symposium is scheduled for April 8, and is a result of discussions
at the 2004 event. Students and teachers will work with area businesses
and organizations to develop a unique lesson plan for use in each school. The
coordinator for the Youth Symposium is Waterson.
The North Country Symposium brings together stakeholders in northern New York
to explore ways to enhance the region's economic, environmental and educational
vitality. It is funded by the University's Ellen C. Burt '42 Endowment for North
Country Education, which was established in 2002 by members of Burt's family to
address the needs of education in the North Country, as well as economic and
environmental concerns. The event was formerly called the Burt Symposium.
Participation by those involved with regional government, business,
education, planning and environmental organizations is welcomed. For information,
contact Coordinator Shannon Brown, 315-229-5664, brown@stlawu.edu, or find
