Chris Norman, David Greenberg Performing In Concert At St. Lawrence
CANTON - "Let me in this ae night," a concert of 18th-century music from Scotland and 21st-century music from Cape Breton will be performed by Chris Norman (wooden flutes, bagpipes, voice and pump organ) and David Greenberg (violin, octave violin and pump organ) on Thursday, January 28, at 8 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel at St. Lawrence University.
Norman and Greenberg will also conduct a workshop on traditional styles (Scottish, Cape Breton, Acadian, Irish and English) for melody instruments, on Wednesday, January 27, at 7 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. Both events are open to the public, free of charge.
The duo have joined forces to present a program that runs the gamut from Renaissance, Baroque, traditional and original music incorporating flutes, violins, vielles, pipes, keyboards and voice. Greenberg has gained the reputation in Cape Breton music circles as being one of the few people from outside the Nova Scotia island to have achieved a fluent command of the Cape Breton idiom. These two extraordinary performers have played together as sparring partners for more than a decade on the concert stage and recording studio.
"Baroque and Scottish music are the main root elements of our style," Norman says. "Eighteenth-century Scottish music in particular cries out for an unusually large and unconventional palette of stylistic interpretations, because its very nature defies classification as either folk or art music. On the folk side, the fiddle style of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, plays a central role. French Acadian music increasingly influences us as well. Our sound represents the ultimate in musical transparency and creative urgency."
