Noontime Recital At St. Lawrence Offers Music For Christmas
CANTON - The noon-hour recital at St. Lawrence University on Friday, December 7, will feature music for Christmas. The event begins at 12:15 p.m. and is free of charge. The audience is encouraged to bring a lunch to enjoy while listening.
In addition to organist Sondra Goldsmith Proctor, the recital features early carols performed by the Ad Hoc Singers.
Organ noëls by Louis-Claude Daquin and Claude Balbastre are on the program. Daquin (1694-1772) was known as a virtuoso organist and harpsichordist of the Baroque period, when it was assumed that the performer would improvise upon the composition. Balbastre (1727-1799) was a composer, organist, harpsichordist and fortepianist. His composition "Ah, ma Voisine, es-tu fachée" tells the story of neighbors talking about the birth of a child that everyone wants to see. Balbastre set six variations on this song.
