Niles Lecture At SLU Focuses On 'Challenges For Our Times'
CANTON - "Challenges for Our Times: Evolution, Genetics and Technology" is the title of the 2009 Niles Memorial Lecture on Science and Religion at St. Lawrence University, to be delivered by Gayle E. Woloschak, director of the Zygon Center for Religion and Science in Chicago, on Monday, March 23, at 8 p.m. in Herring-Cole. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
Woloschak is also a professor in the radiation oncology department, radiology department and cell and molecular biology department at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, and an adjunct professor of religion and science studies at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago.
Science is currently bringing to the fore challenging questions that come about from recent discoveries in evolution, genetics and technology. In her lecture, Woloschak will address some of those questions, including Who are we as human beings?; What do we consider to be normal?; and How far is too far with regard to technologies? Woloschak will attempt to define these challenges in light of recent findings and examine the border where science can provide answers and where other disciplines such as philosophy, theology and other humanities may be required to play a role.
