SLU CELEBRATES NATIONAL FOREIGN LANGUAGE WEEK
CANTON - Workshops, film screenings and discussions are among the events that will
mark the celebration of National Foreign Language Week at St. Lawrence University,
March 4 through 12. Highlighting the importance of language learning and promoting
international experience and exposure to different cultures, the events have been
organized by the modern languages and literatures department and the Center for
International and Intercultural Studies.
Over 100 members of the faculty and staff at St. Lawrence have indicated that
they speak at least one foreign language; about 50 languages in all are spoken
by people at the University, including the seven that are taught. Those who speak
foreign languages will have signs on their office doors, indicating which languages
they speak, during the celebration. A Web site, http://www.stlawu.edu/lrc/nflw2006,
has been established for the celebration, allowing visitors to learn - and hear -
foreign phrases. International flags will be displayed throughout the Student
Center to celebrate the different countries represented on campus, and Dana Dining
Center will serve a variety of international foods. The public is welcome to join
students at Dana for dinner any night of the week to sample the international fare,
at a cost of $9 per person; dinner is served from 5 to 8 p.m.
Also, Owen D. Young Library will highlight international periodicals and other resources
