THREE NEW SLU TRUSTEES ELECTED

CANTON -- The St. Lawrence University Board of Trustees
elected three new members during its summer meeting, held
June 27 at the Canaras Conference Center in Upper Saranac Lake.
Elected were Derrick H. Pitts '78, of Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania; Jennifer W. Curley '90, of Washington, D.C.; and
Martyn N. Ball '90, of New York City.
Pitts, vice president/chief astronomer of the Fels Planetarium
and Tuttleman Omniverse Theater at the Franklin Institute Science Museum
in Philadelphia, was elected to a six-year term, effective July 1. He
has appeared on many national news programs to talk about astronomy and
hosts several radio programs on astronomy. Pitts received his degree from
St. Lawrence in geology and was a member of the Laurentian Singers while
a student. He was awarded an Alumni Citation in 1991 by the University for
his career in astronomy and encouragement of education.
Curley and Ball have been elected as McCurdy/Sprague Trustees,
positions created this year by the Board, to be filled by two alumni who,
at the time of their election, will have graduated from the University no
more than 10 years earlier. The positions were created to assure
representation on the Board from graduates close to the St. Lawrence
student experience.
Curley, elected to a four-year term, is an account supervisor
with Edelman Public Relations Worldwide in Washington. She earned a master's
degree from American University in 1995 and is a former special assistant
to the chief of protocol in the Department of State. Curley earned her
St. Lawrence degree in government, and studied in Vienna, participated
in student government and was a resident assistant while a student. She
has been a member of the Alumni Executive Council, and has been a volunteer
for the University in reunion planning, admissions and career advising.
Ball, elected to a two-year term, is vice president for institutional
sales at Goldman, Sachs and Company in New York. He majored in English at
St. Lawrence and was a member of the men's ice hockey team as well as a
Baker/Vilas Scholar. He has been a volunteer in fund-raising, admissions
and career advising.
The new positions are named after two early graduates of St. Lawrence.
Delos McCurdy was one of two men to receive a degree in the first graduating
class in 1865. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and went on to a career in law
and served as a trustee. Sarah Sprague, a native of Gouverneur, was one of two
women to receive a degree in the second graduating class in 1866. She went on
to receive a Ph.D. in education and was a force in education all of her life,
authoring several educational primers.
