NEWELL FIELD HOUSE AT SLU TO BE DEDICATED OCT. 20

CANTON - St. Lawrence University's Newell Field House and Fitness
Center will be dedicated with a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony on
Saturday, October 20, at 1:30 p.m. The event is open to the public,
as is a day-long open house at the facility.
Events scheduled for the open house, from 1 to 4 p.m.,
include children's field day activities, demonstrations of the Munro
Family Climbing Wall, demonstrations of fitness equipment, a
three-on-three student basketball tournament and a dance class. The
Frog Bridge Band will provide musical entertainment.
The new facility, which opened this fall, is named for
longtime friends of the University and of the North Country Allan
and Catherine Newell of Hammond, New York. Allan Newell has been a
trustee of St. Lawrence University since 1993; Catherine Newell
received the North Country Citation from the University at Commencement
in May. In addition to being supportive of athletic opportunities for
students at St. Lawrence, the Newells have also established a
scholarship benefiting North Country students at the University.
A state-of-the-art fitness facility overlooking Leckonby Stadium,
Weeks Field and North Country Field on campus, the Newell Field House
and Fitness Center includes a variety of weight machines, treadmills,
stationary bicycles and other aerobic fitness devices. A separate room
houses a vast free-weight area for serious weight-lifting. It is
available for St. Lawrence athletes, the University campus and community
members of the fitness club. Included in the field house are a
200-meter indoor track with throwing and jumping areas, five indoor
tennis courts and basketball courts for intramural or recreational
play. The infield surface can also be used for team practices.
Rock-climbers can enjoy their sport year-round on the three-story
Munro Family Climbing Wall, which is located in the field house. The
climbing wall includes pullies for ropes and holes for pitons to make
scaling the artificial rocks just like the real thing. The Littlejohn
Athletic Training Room is a spacious area for the care and prevention
of athletic injuries. Staffed by four certified athletic trainers plus
trained student assistants, the Littlejohn Training Room facilities
make possible the care of all University athletes and include rehabilitation
equipment, taping tables and whirlpools.
