NORTH COUNTRY SYMPOSIUM AT SLU APRIL 24
CANTON - St. Lawrence University will host the 5th Annual North Country Symposium on
Education, Environment, and Economic Vitality on Tuesday, April 24, from 8:30 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m. in Eben Holden Conference Center on campus.
The symposium is sponsored by the University's Ellen C. Burt '42 Endowment and
participation by regional government, business, education, planning and environmental
organizations is welcome. This year's theme is "North Country First - Creating
Opportunities for Sustainable Growth."
The keynote address, "Renewable Fuels and Workforce Development in the North Country,"
will be given by Ed Murphy, executive director of New York State's AFL-CIO Workforce
Development Institute. Murphy is also co-founder of the Apollo Alliance, an organization
dedicated to developing sustainable solutions to the nation's energy needs at the same
level as NASA's Apollo program, which successfully put a person on the moon in 1969.
Progress reports on new community development initiatives in the region will also be
given. In addition, time will be allotted for participants to meet as action/research
teams to make plans for the coming year.
