NORTH COUNTRY SYMPOSIUM APRIL 17 AT ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY
CANTON - The Fourth Annual North Country Symposium will take place on Monday, April 17,
from 6:15 to 9 p.m. in Eben Holden Conference Center at St. Lawrence University. The
central topic of this year's event is "Seizing the Initiative: Applying North Country
Symposium Ideas to St. Lawrence County Projects."
Exhibits by action groups, agencies and cooperatives in the region will open
beginning at 6:15 p.m. At 7 p.m., James Shuman, chair of the North Country Symposium
Steering Committee will give opening remarks.
After the opening remarks, a panel of speakers will address new initiatives in
St. Lawrence County. They include St. Lawrence University President Daniel F.
Sullivan; Shannon Brown, coordinator for community development at St. Lawrence;
St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Karen St. Hilaire;
Clarkson University President Anthony Collins; Director of the Clarkson Ethics
Initiative William Vitek; and Judy Aldrich, chair of the St. Lawrence County
Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board. The presentations will be followed
by a question-and-answer session.
The North Country Symposium is open to all interested persons. While there is no
registration fee, pre-registration sign-up is requested. Registration materials are

The North Country Symposium brings together stakeholders in northern New York to
explore ways to enhance the region's economic, environmental and educational vitality.
It is funded by the University's Ellen C. Burt '42 Endowment for North Country
Education, which was established in 2002 by members of Burt's family to address
the needs of education in the North Country, as well as economic and environmental
concerns. The event was formerly called the Burt Symposium.
