GardenShare Founder & Director Harnden To Receive SLU's North Country Citation

CANTON - Philip Harnden, the founder and executive director of GardenShare, is the recipient of the 2011 North Country Citation from St. Lawrence University. The Citation will be awarded at Commencement, on Sunday, May 22, at 10 a.m.

Founded in 1998 by Harnden, GardenShare publishes an annual Local Food Guide that lists farmers' markets, farm stands, U-pick orchards, restaurants, grocers and other outlets that offer food raised in St. Lawrence County. It organizes in a central location the farms that participate in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), a partnership between farmers and local consumers that benefits both parties. Educational programming and communications materials also spread the word about sustainable agriculture and proper nutrition.

Harnden is the author of The Gardener's Guide to Frost (2003) and the editor of the 2007 volume Journeys of Simplicity: Traveling Light with Thomas Merton, Basho, Edward Abbey, Annie Dillard, & Others, a collection of essays about travel.

The University annually awards the North Country Citation to an individual or group from the region who, through professional and volunteer endeavors, has improved the quality of life in the North Country.
