ATHLETIC GRANTS-IN-AID WILL CONTINUE AT SLU

CANTON – St. Lawrence University will continue to offer grants-in-aid to
players in Division I men's and women's hockey, following a vote today at
the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) convention in Nashville,
Tennessee.
NCAA Division III colleges and universities rejected a proposal
that would have disallowed grants-in-aid, effective August 2008, at
St. Lawrence and seven other schools that compete in Division I in some
sports.
"We are pleased that our colleagues among NCAA member institutions
understood that grants-in-aid help us recruit women's and men's hockey
student-athletes who are both representative of the St. Lawrence student
body as a whole and very talented athletes," said University President
Daniel F. Sullivan, who attended the NCAA convention. "This vote also
recognizes that St. Lawrence and the other seven colleges that would
have been affected by the waiver revocation do live up to the
Division III ideals of broad-based participation and a student
development-focused philosophy, and will continue to support Division III
principles even with Division I sports among our offerings."
The Division III membership voted 296 to 106 in favor of an
amendment proposed by the eight schools (Clarkson University, Colorado
College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Johns Hopkins University,
Hartwick College, SUNY Oneonta and Rutgers University – Newark). As
passed, the amended version of Proposal 65 continues a waiver, first
granted in 1983, that allows the eight to provide athletic financial
aid in their traditional Division I sports. It closes the door, however,
on any future growth in the number of Division III schools that offer
athletic aid in a Division I sport.
The original version of Proposal 65 was sent to the convention by
the Division III Presidents Council. It was part of a package of nine
proposals that the council said was intended to align the division's
practices with its athletic philosophy.
