A List 4/7/03 SLU AWARDED GRANT FUNDING MINORITY AND WOMEN'S INTERNSHIP CANTON - St. Lawrence University is one of 10 institutions selected to receive a two-year National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Ethnic Minority and Women's Internship Grant, for 2003-2005. Some 35 proposals for the award were submitted. The $15,000 grant will assist in funding a two-year, 12-month internship program in athletic administration at the University; the individual selected must be an ethnic minority or a woman. A recent two-year study by the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee on the racial demographics of the NCAA membership's athletics personnel indicated that Division III has the lowest percentage of ethnic minority and women coaches and administrators among the three divisions of the NCAA (there has been a slight increase since the baseline of year 1995). The Division III Presidents and Management Councils have decided to address this challenge directly. The Division III Initiatives Task Force was established to help the division better meet the objectives set forth by the NCAA and Division III and to bring the division's strategic plan to life. The Ethnic Minority and Women's Internship Grant Program is an important initiative that supports Division III's stated mission of supporting ethnic and gender diversity for all constituents. "I am extremely pleased that St. Lawrence has been named as a grant recipient for our proposed position, coordinator of student-athlete support services and assistant coach," stated Director of Athletics Margaret Strait. "The athletics department is looking forward to taking part in this important initiative that will assist us in planning, coordination and the recruitment of ethnic-minority student-athletes."-30- Back To News Releases Back to St. Lawrence Homepage
