SLU GETS NCAA GRANT FOR DIVERSITY EDUCATION
CANTON - The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has awarded a Division III
Initiative Grant of $10,000 for diversity programming to St. Lawrence University. The grant
will assist with funding workshops on diversity issues for first- and second-year
student-athletes.
Workshops will be given during the fall 2005 semester by Rodney S. Patterson, director
of training and development for Hudson Inclusion Solutions, a diversity education
specialist; and David B. Hunt, president and CEO of Critical Measures, a management
consulting firm that specializes in diversity-related matters. Both facilitated a
previous workshop held at St. Lawrence, and student-athletes who attended encouraged
the athletic department to program additional educational events, with a goal of
raising awareness about diversity issues and the leadership role that student-athletes
have in creating a positive climate for diversity across campus.
"This grant will assist St. Lawrence in our ambitious program to provide training to
future team and campus leaders," said Athletic Director Margaret Strait. "We hope it
will be a major step toward building greater awareness of diversity issues and promoting
tolerance of difference within our community, and we are grateful to the NCAA for their
support."
The program is under the direction of Neil Cifuentes, coordinator of student-athlete
support services at St. Lawrence.
