Caption 5/16/05 SLU ALUMNA DONATES FLAG FOR COMMENCEMENT -- Norma B. Tarbell-Sunday, at left in the photo, has donated a flag representing the founding of the Iroquois Confederacy for use at ceremonial occasions at St. Lawrence University. Tarbell-Sunday received her bachelor's degree from the University in 1988; a master's degree in general studies from St. Lawrence in 1996; a master's degree in counseling and human development in 2002; and on May 15 of this year, a certificate of advanced studies in counseling. She is also a former staff member of the University. St. Lawrence displays flags at Commencement and other ceremonies that represent the home countries of its students. Beginning with Commencement 2005, it included the flag given by Tarbell-Sunday, which depicts the Hiawatha Belt, representing the founding of the Iroquois Confederacy, uniting five nations: Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas and Senecas. Accepting the flag is St. Lawrence Associate Vice President for University Relations Lisa M. Cania, chair of the Commencement Committee.
