CANTON - A wind quintet of members of Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra will
perform at St. Lawrence University on Saturday, February 4, at 8 p.m. in Gilbert Recital
Hall, Griffiths Arts Center. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
The NAC Orchestra of Canada, now under the direction of renowned
conductor/violinist/violist Pinchas Zukerman, draws accolades both abroad and at its
home in Ottawa, where it gives over 100 performances a year.
The quintet includes Joanna G'froerer, principal flute; Charles Hamann, principal
oboe; Christopher Millard, principal bassoon; Kimball Sykes, principal clarinet; and
Lawrence Vine, principal horn. They will perform Quintet in E Minor, Franz Danzi
(1763-1826); Bacchianas Brasilieras No. 6 for flute and bassoon, Heitor Villa-Lobos
(1887-1959); Quintet for Wind Instruments in G Minor, Paul Taffanel (1844-1908); and
Quintet for Winds (1978), John Harbison (b. 1938).
The NAC Orchestra was founded in 1969 as the resident orchestra of the newly opened
National Arts Centre. In addition to a full series of subscription concerts at the
National Arts Centre each season, tours are undertaken to regions throughout Canada
and around the world. NAC members frequently give master classes to student musicians.
Hamann will return to St. Lawrence later in the month, for a workshop with the
St. Lawrence Wind Ensemble.
