COMMUNITY MEMBERS WELCOMED IN SLU MUSIC ENSEMBLES
CANTON - The St. Lawrence University music department offers several
ensembles whose membership is open to the community. The University
Chorus, the Early Music Players, the Early Music Singers and the
Special Productions Ensemble will be accepting new members for the
Fall 2002 semester.
The University Chorus numbers between 40 to 50 singers. Its
fall concerts, to be presented on Saturday, November 16, and Sunday,
November 17, will feature Vivaldi's Gloria to be performed with
orchestra. Music of Pachelbel, Britten and Vaughan-Williams will
also be sung. The Chorus also sings in the annual Candlelight Service
to be held this year on Wednesday, December 11. Rehearsals are on
Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 15 in Griffiths Arts Center.
The Early Music Ensemble is comprised of two groups, the Early
Music Players and the Early Music Singers. Their repertoire is drawn
from the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods and is played on a
wide variety of early instruments from the University's Romer Collection,
including recorders, crumhorns, harp, organetto, lute, viols, shawms and
harpsichord. No previous experience on these instruments is required.
However, a good working knowledge of modern strings, winds or keyboards
is a plus. The Players rehearse on Monday evenings at 7 p.m. in Gilbert
Recital Hall. The Singers concentrate on the great sacred a capella music
of the time and meet on Thursdays in Gunnison Chapel also at 7 p.m.
The Early Music Ensemble concert will be on Sunday, December 4.
	Auditions for these ensembles will be held on Tuesday, August 27;
Thursday, August 29; and Wednesday, September 4, all from 7 to 9 p.m. in
Room 24 of Griffiths Arts Center. If you cannot attend at these times or
for more information please contact Barry Torres, director of music
ensembles, at 315-229-5171 or btorres@stlawu.edu.
The Special Productions Ensemble this semester is playing
arrangements of songs from Richard Rodgers musicals from the 1930s.
The performance, on Thursday, November 21, will be staged as an old-time
radio show, with dance-band arrangements, some voice and piano arrangements,
and some more lush orchestral numbers. Participation is open to all
instrumentalists by audition only, which will be held in Gilbert Recital
Hall in the Griffiths Art Center on Tuesday, September 3, from 5 to
7 p.m. and Wednesday, September 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. For further
information on the Special Productions Ensemble, please contact director
David Henderson at 315-229-5085 or dhenderson@stlawu.edu.
