$172.1 Million Raised In Momentum St. Lawrence Campaign

CANTON - A total of $172.1 million was raised in the Momentum St. Lawrence campaign, which concluded December 31, 2010. The total was announced at a campus/community picnic held on Saturday, February 26, and is the most money ever raised in a campaign in the University's history.

St. Lawrence President William L. Fox said, "The history of St. Lawrence University is one that embraces a pioneer spirit, open to experimentation and creativity. We sustain that spirit with the tremendous support of the generous donors to Momentum St. Lawrence. I speak as one voice in the chorus of Laurentians, expressing my thanks for the extraordinary generosity of our trustees, alumni, parents, friends, faculty and staff. Their gifts are being used to build upon the magnificent strengths of this special place, ensuring that the University's culture of innovation will endure."

Over seven years, gifts to Momentum St. Lawrence made possible:
- Creation of 45 new endowed scholarships for students
- Funding for 28 University Fellows, students selected to pursue independent research with faculty mentors
- Six new endowed professorships
- Additions and enhancements to facilities, including the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Johnson Hall of Science; the Sullivan Student Center; the Diana B. Torrey '82 Health and Counseling Center; Steiner Senior Townhouse residences for students; Pub 56, a social gathering space; new space for student radio station KSLU and performance venue Java; arts facilities throughout the Noble University Center, Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall most notably; athletic facilities, such as North Country Field, Leet-Hall Stadium and locker/meeting rooms for football.

A new program still being developed is the New York City Semester, designed to allow students interested in finance or arts management to study and live in New York. Fund-raising is still in progress for the program, with an anticipated start date in the spring 2012 semester.

Specifically, Momentum St. Lawrence raised:
- $51.5 million for the University's endowment; $41.1 million for facilities; $20.9 million for program enhancements; $37.2 in support of the St. Lawrence Fund; and $21.4 million in undesignated bequests or trusts; unrestricted gifts; gifts-in-kind; and miscellaneous gifts.

Announcing the totals, Momentum St. Lawrence Chair R. Sheldon Johnson said, "On behalf of my vice-chairs, Trustees Jay Ireland, Sarah Johnson Redlich and Jo Ann Campbell, we thank our fellow trustees, who collectively donated $71.5 million, or an amazing 42 percent of the campaign totals. We thank the members of the National Major Gifts Committee for their tireless and enthusiastic work. We thank the faculty, staff and students who inspired such philanthropy or worked as our partners. And we thank all benefactors of St. Lawrence for the faith you have shown in your commitments."

"Momentum St. Lawrence persevered through the recession starting in 2008, transforming the way students, faculty and staff live and learn at the University in fundamental and important ways," said Vice President for Advancement Michael P. Archibald. "The vast majority of campaign objectives were met. We are profoundly grateful for the support we have received."

The planning phase for Momentum St. Lawrence began in 2003, immediately following the conclusion of Campaign St. Lawrence. The two initiatives have resulted in $300 million raised for the University since 1997.
