SLU HALF-WAY TO 'MOMENTUM' GOAL, WITH $100 MILLION
CANTON - Seven months after the kick-off of Momentum St. Lawrence, just over $100
million has been raised by the University, representing the half-way mark towards
a total campaign goal of $200 million.
Specifically, $24.7 million has been raised towards a goal of $100 million for
the University's endowment; $28.8 million has been raised towards a goal of
$45 million for facilities; and $21.3 million has been raised towards a goal
of $35 million for the St. Lawrence Fund. In addition, members of the Board
of Trustees have surpassed their goal of $50 million, with over $51 million
raised to date in gifts and pledges from approximately 50 current and former
trustees, representing one half of the campaign's progress to date.
"We are on the move. We must remain on the move," President Daniel F. Sullivan stated
on October 13, 2006 in announcing Momentum St. Lawrence, a campaign to raise $200
million by December 31, 2010. He added that more than $86 million had been raised
towards the goal at that point.
"Reaching the mid-point of the Momentum St. Lawrence Campaign is a significant
achievement," Sullivan stated. "We must keep the pressure on in our pursuit of the
necessary resources to make an outstanding St. Lawrence education within reach
for more and more deserving students."
Among the most significant gifts to the University for Momentum St. Lawrence are:
- $10 million from Trustee Sarah Johnson Redlich '82, for the Johnson Hall of Science,
scheduled to open in the fall.
- $5 million from Trustee and Momentum St. Lawrence Chair R. Sheldon '68 and Virginia
"Peachy" Johnson, for two professorships and one administrative position.
- A $5 million anonymous gift for the Johnson Hall of Science.
- $3 million from Trustee Emeritus Richard F. Brush '52, for arts facilities.
Campus facilities that have been constructed or improved through gifts to Momentum
St. Lawrence include the Johnson Hall of Science, the Diana B. Torrey '82 Health
and Counseling Center, the Noble Center, Griffiths Arts Center and the Student Center.
"On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I express my sincere gratitude to every donor to
Momentum St. Lawrence to date, and invite the rest of the Laurentian community to
join us with their thoughtful support of the University by participating in the
campaign," Shel Johnson said.
Vice President for Advancement Michael P. Archibald said, "Many of the funding
objectives are on track, including the St. Lawrence Fund and our facilities projects.
We must, however, accelerate our progress in building the University's endowment
with new gifts. Only about one-quarter of Momentum St. Lawrence's $100-million
endowment objective has been achieved, and we must do better in securing new endowed
scholarships for students and professorships for faculty, if we are to secure the
University's competitive future. This will be an area of concentrated focus during
the second half of this campaign."
