SLU Plans Teach-In, Service Marking Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
CANTON - On the first day of classes for the spring 2008 semester, St. Lawrence
University will hold a teach-in on Monday, January 21, celebrating Martin Luther
King, Jr. Day. The events are open to the public, and free of charge with the
exception of dinner.
The schedule follows:
- 11:30 a.m. - Foreword: Protest Music, presentation/performance by Associate
Professor of Global Studies John Collins, Student Center Winston Room
- 11:50 a.m. - Welcome, President Daniel F. Sullivan, Student Center Winston Room
- Noon-4:30 p.m. - Films and Speeches, Student Center Monaco Room
- Noon-4:30 p.m. - Activities for children, Student Center Crandall Room
- Noon-12:50 p.m. - Panel discussion on Martin Luther King, Jr. and the historical
context of the civil rights movement with Professor of Government Joseph
Kling, Associate Professor of History Elizabeth Regosin and Associate Professor
of History Mary Jane Smith, Student Center Winston Room
- 1-2 p.m. - "Let Freedom Sing!," music of the civil rights movement and
its historical roots with Associate Chaplain Shaun Whitehead and the
Freedom Singers Ensemble, Student Center Winston Room
- 2-2:50 p.m. - Panel discussion on "unknown voices" of the civil rights
movement with Associate Professor of English Margaret Kent Bass and
students, Student Center Winston Room
- 2:50-3:10 p.m. - Protest music performance by Christa Aikins-Hill and Timothy Hill, Student
Center Winston Room
- 3:10-4 p.m. - Presentation on non-violent strategies with Chaplain
Kathleen Buckley and Associate Professor of Philosophy Laura Rediehs,
Student Center Winston Room
- 4-4:30 p.m. - "People Who Were There," with Associate Professor of English
Margaret Kent Bass, Student Center Winston Room
- 4:30-5 p.m. - March from the Student Center to Gunnison Memorial Chapel,
organized by the Black Students Union
- 5-6:30 - Service, Gunnison Memorial Chapel
- 6:30 p.m. - Theme dinner, featuring Southern cuisine, in Dana
Dining Center, cost $9 per person
