CANTON - Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be celebrated at
St. Lawrence University with the opening of an exhibition of
black-and-white photographs of King in the Richard F. Brush
Art Gallery on campus.
Countdown to Eternity, photographs by Benedict J.
Fernandez, will be on exhibition from January 21 through February
13. Two events will be held in conjunction with the exhibition:
	- On Monday, January 21, a service will be held beginning
at 5 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel, with remarks by University
President Daniel F. Sullivan. Following the service, there will
be a candlelight procession to the Underground in the E.J. Noble
University Center, with an "open microphone" and video screening
of I Have A Dream.
	- On Friday, February 8, at 4 p.m. in Room 123 of the
Griffiths Arts Center, Fernandez will give a slide lecture titled
"Conscience: The Ultimate Weapon." A reception will follow.
The exhibition is comprised of 50 photographs of King and
events during the civil rights movement, taken by Fernandez from 1965
to 1968. It includes such images as King addressing a crowd of 500,000
outside the United Nations on April 15, 1967; King with staff members
at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference Headquarters; King at
home and at church with his family in Atlanta; and finally, supporters
assembled to honor the slain civil rights leader following his
assassination in Memphis on April 6, 1968. In addition, photographs of
Andrew Young, Julian Bond, Jesse Jackson, Robert Kennedy, and other
civil rights activists such as Dick Gregory, Dr. Benjamin Spock and
James Baldwin are included.
Photographs by Fernandez have been published in The New York Times
and in Benedict J. Fernandez, Protest: Photographs, 1963-1995 (Edition
Stemmle, 1996) and In Opposition: Images of American Dissent in the
Sixties (Da Capo Press, 1968). He has taught photography at the New
School for Social Research in New York and received awards from the
John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the National Endowment

The exhibition is presented at St. Lawrence University in
conjunction with Flippin' the Script: Recognizing Differences, Finding
