SLU HOSTS SERVICE FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY
CANTON - Although Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed on January 16, St. Lawrence
University will hold a service to mark the holiday on Monday, January 23, the first day
of classes in the spring 2006 semester. The service will be in Gunnison Memorial
Chapel on campus, beginning at 5 p.m.
The keynote speaker for the service is the Reverend Joan Brown Campbell, director of
the department of religion at The Chautauqua Institute. She has visited St. Lawrence
several times, including for Commencement in 2004, when she was awarded an honorary
degree by the University.
Also speaking is Class of 1980 graduate David S. Blanchard, minister of the First
Unitarian Universalist Society in Syracuse.
Both Campbell and Blanchard will address issues of leadership and civility, at the
service and in classes and meetings to be held on campus. The topics form one of the
themes of the University's celebration of its Sesquicentennial, or 150th
anniversary, being held throughout the academic year.
