SLU HISTORY PROF'S BOOK CELEBRATED BY LIBRARIES GROUP
CANTON - The Friends of Owen D. Young and Launders Libraries at St. Lawrence University
will celebrate the publication of Assistant Professor of History Michael Kemper's book
Herrschaft, Recht and Islam in Daghestan: Von den Khanaten and Gemeindebunden zum
gihad-Staat ("Political Rule, Law and Islam in Daghestan: From the Khanates and Community
Federations to the Jihad State") on Friday, April 27, at 4 p.m. in the Josephine Young
Room of Owen D. Young Library. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
In the book, Kemper discusses the Islamic jihad of the North Caucasian mountaineers
against the Russian colonial encroachment in the context of the longstanding
tradition of Islamic legal scholarship and the history of Islamic rule in the
region itself. The work is based on a wide array of Arabic sources from the
North Caucasus, as well as on military documentation and scholarly works in the
Russian language.
Kemper, who joined the St. Lawrence faculty in 2005, earned his master's degree
in Islamic, Oriental and Slavic studies and the Ph.D. in Islamic studies at
Bochum University in Germany. He speaks several languages and is the author of
additional works, as well as co-editor of the forthcoming book Islamic Education
in the Soviet Union and the CIS.
