Comedy Of Manners 'The Misanthrope' Presented At St. Lawrence

CANTON - Molière's The Misanthrope will be performed at St. Lawrence University Wednesday through Saturday, November 2-5, at 8 p.m. each evening in Gulick Theatre. Admission is free, but tickets are required. The Gulick Box Office (315-229-5748) is open Monday-Friday noon-5 p.m. Oct. 31-Nov. 4 and prior to performances.

Directed by Visiting Assistant Professor of Performance and Communication Arts Christopher Clarke, The Misanthrope is a 17th-century comedy of manners in verse. The play satirizes the hypocrisies of French aristocratic society, but more broadly points out the flaws which all humans possess. Molière was the stage name of actor and playwright Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, considered to be one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature.
