'MUSICIANS IN ORDINARY' TO PERFORM AT SLU

CANTON -- The Musicians in Ordinary will perform in St. Lawrence
University's Gretchen Bence Young Artist Recital on Thursday,
March 30, at 8 p.m. in Herring-Cole Hall on campus. The event is
open to the public, free of charge.
The Musicians in Ordinary are vocalist Hallie Fishel and
accompanist John Edwards. They will perform John Dowland's "Second
Book of Songs," published some 400 years ago.
Dedicated to exploring the solo song and vocal chamber music
of the 16th and 17th centuries, the duo is known for the attention
to detail they give to historical pronunciation and the playing
techniques of their period instruments. The Musicians in Ordinary
perform regularly in their hometown of Toronto and at festivals.
Fishel has been praised for her "pure voice" and "ornamental
style," and records for the Focus label. She has been heard on National
Public Radio and has also studied and performed as a baroque dancer.
Edwards, a lutenist, is a frequent continuo player and accompanist
throughout North America. He has been heard on CBC radio, seen on Bravo
and has recorded for the Oasis and Naxos labels.
The Young Artists Series was established by contributions from
the family and friends of the late Gretchen Bence, a 1950 graduate of
St. Lawrence and a professional opera singer, following her receipt of
an honorary degree from St. Lawrence in 1985.
