CANTON'S DR. MILLARD DONATES $1.2 MILLION TO ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON - Retired Canton physician Lester C. Millard, a 1939 graduate
of St. Lawrence University, has donated $1.2 million to his alma mater
in the form of a charitable gift annuity. It is the largest such gift
in the history of the University.
Under the charitable gift annuity program, donors may make
donations to colleges and universities and receive income for life.
Dr. Millard's gift will be used for facilities renovation and
construction, the establishment of a scholarship to benefit graduates
of Hugh C. Williams High School in Canton and general purposes.
Dr. Millard began his practice in Canton in 1956, and retired
in 1988. He spent part of his life growing up on a farm in the Gouverneur
area, and earned his St. Lawrence degree in English. From 1939 to 1942,
Dr. Millard was a high school English teacher at Brookfield Central
School in Brookfield, New York. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942
to 1946, and entered medical school in 1952. In 1956, Dr. Millard
received his D.O. from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
St. Lawrence President Daniel F. Sullivan said, "On behalf
of all Laurentians, I want to thank Dr. Millard warmly and deeply
for his truly wonderful and generous gift. The purposes for which his
gift will be used are at the very core of our future needs and for
that we are very grateful."
A resident of Partridge Knoll in Canton, Millard is a frequent
and active user of the University's fitness center on campus. He
commented, "By guaranteeing a fixed income, I no longer have to worry
about market volatility. With my gift annuity payments, I have actually
increased my overall income. Best of all, I know that the university
will use my gift wisely to help future generations of students."
