METCALF NAMED SLU DIRECTOR OF ACADEMIC ADVISING

CANTON - St. Lawrence University Vice President and Dean of
Academic Affairs Thomas B. Coburn has announced the appointment
of Richard A. Metcalf, associate professor of sport and leisure
studies, to the new position of director of academic advising.
The position was created at the recommendation of the
Faculty Council, as the centerpiece of a plan to improve the
quality of the University's academic advising system. In addition
to the appointment of Metcalf, St. Lawrence plans to improve
written resources available to advisors and students; provide new
support to students in transition from the First-Year Program to
their academic majors, to transfer students, to those studying abroad
and those whose major is undecided; make better use of experienced
faculty in advising; improve communications between the registrar's
office and advisors; and move the University toward on-line communication
for course registration.
A member of the St. Lawrence faculty since 1963, Metcalf has
served as a department chair, a member of Faculty Council, the Professional
Standards Committee, a faculty member in the First-Year Program and interim
dean of admissions. He will continue to teach and assist in coaching women's
softball. Metcalf is a 1963 graduate of St. Lawrence, with a doctorate in
education from West Virginia University.
