ST. LAWRENCE WINS GRANT FOR UNDERGRADUATE SCIENCE RESEARCH

CANTON -- The Merck Company Foundation and the American
Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) have selected
St. Lawrence University to receive a 2001 Merck/AAAS Undergraduate
Science Research Program award.
The Merck/AAAS Undergraduate Science Research Program is a
national competitive awards program available in all 50 states, the
District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. St. Lawrence was one of 15
institutions receiving the awards this year, with each award providing
$20,000 annually for up to three years. Awards are made for joint use
by the biology and chemistry departments.
The purpose of the program is to provide undergraduate research
experiences that enhance the understanding of the interdisciplinary
relationship between biology and chemistry; to encourage graduate
education in biology and chemistry; and to promote undergraduate programs
and activities that bridge chemistry and biology.
At St. Lawrence, the award will provide funding for collaborative
research by faculty and students, as well as assist in the development of
courses in the biology and chemistry departments for a new program in
biochemistry.
St. Lawrence also received the award in 1997, funding the
program through 2000.
