SLU STUDENTS WIN AWARDS FOR NORTH COUNTRY RESEARCH

CANTON – Students at St. Lawrence University have earned awards for research 
conducted on topics of regional interest, from Hispanic workers on area dairy farms 
to the environmental impact of a proposed Wal-Mart "supercenter."
All of the winning papers are available for reading on-line through the St. Lawrence University Libraries Web site. Two categories of awards are made, for research papers and for bibliographies. The Josephine G. Mentley/St. Lawrence and North Country Studies Award honors Mentley, a former University reference librarian, who dedicated 27 years to training St. Lawrence students for a lifetime of learning. Winning papers must be focused on topics, issues or concerns having to do with Northern New York or with St. Lawrence University history. The paper can be a product of archival research work with special collections, based on fieldwork or creative expression. The 2005 winners are: - Best Honors Research Paper, Heather L. Thomas '05, of Granville, New York, for the paper "St. Lawrence County and the Politics of the United States Department of Agriculture." - Best Undergraduate Research Paper, Mallory N. Craig-Kuhn '07, of Penn Yan, New York, for the paper "Trabajando: Hispanic Workers on the North Country's Dairy Farms." - Best Undergraduate Research Paper, Linda M. Wilton '05, of Oak Ridge, New Jersey, for the paper "Snow Bowl: A History and a Look into Ski Area Development." The Samuel Johnson Bibliography Prize recognizes the merit of Johnson's observation, and rewards academic excellence of St. Lawrence students by annually awarding the best bibliographies in honors and undergraduate research papers. Criteria for the Johnson award are relevance of sources to the paper's topic; comprehensiveness of the bibliography; skillful synthesis of sources in the paper; and accuracy and consistency of bibliographic format. The 2005 winners are: - Best Honors Bibliography, Joshua A. Lynch '05, of Waddington, New York, for the paper "American Security Predicament: Minimizing the Threat of Nuclear Proliferation in North Korea." - Best Undergraduate Bibliography, Alyson B. Courtemanch '05, of Mount Vernon, Maine, and Elena J.
