ST. LAWRENCE AWARDED GRANT BY MELLON FOUNDATION

CANTON -- St. Lawrence University has received a $170,000 grant
from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support the establishment
of a Center for Teaching and Learning that aims to inspire "creativity,
risk-taking, collaboration and continuous learning by all faculty
members at all stages in their teaching careers."
The Center is planned to consolidate and coordinate existing
services for instructional support, as well as foster the development
of new initiatives. Among them are workshops and seminars on teaching
through technology, strategies for effective teaching and increasing
diversity in the classroom; reciprocal faculty support, such as a mentor
program, consultation services, support for department chairs, program
coordinators and projects for innovative teaching; and a resource center
and videotaping service. In addition, the Center will explore programs
in service learning and community service, experiential education, classroom
assessment strategies, team teaching and general instructional design issues.
The development of strategies for collaborative and productive
peer review opportunities is also planned as a program for the Center.
"We are extremely grateful to The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for
their support of this exciting venture," commented St. Lawrence University
Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs Thomas B. Coburn. "We believe
it is critical to strengthen the interface between instructional technology,
the faculty and emerging pedagogical issues. This grant will allow us to
do that."
Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Associate professor of
Psychology Kim M. Mooney has been named director of the Center for
Teaching and Learning.
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has provided St. Lawrence with a number
of generous grants over the past three decades, all of which have enabled the
institution to think creatively about how to enhance the curriculum in new
and innovative ways. Examples in recent years include grant support to
initiate the University's Technology for Teaching Project and its Cultural
Encounters Program, and a "Fresh Combinations" grant to implement the
pilot version of the St. Lawrence First-Year Program.
