'Meeting Resistance' Filmmakers Set For SLU Contemporary Issues Forum
CANTON - Meeting Resistance, a film about who was behind the emerging post-war
violence in Iraq, will be shown on Monday, March 31, at 8 p.m. in Eben Holden Center
on the St. Lawrence University campus, followed by a discussion with the film's
directors, Steve Connors and Molly Bingham. The event, part of the Contemporary
Issues Forum, is open to the public, free of charge.
Meeting Resistance "raises the veil of anonymity surrounding the Iraqi
insurgency by meeting face to face with individuals who are passionately
engaged in the struggle, and documenting, for the very first time, the
sentiments experienced and actions taken by a nation's citizens when their
homeland is occupied," the filmmakers state. "Voices that have previously
not been heard, male and female, speak candidly about their motivations,
hopes and goals, revealing a kaleidoscope of human perspectives."
Connors spent the early1990s covering the wars following the break-up of
Yugoslavia, later spending time in Russia and the former Soviet Union.
He has worked for most of the world's newspapers and magazines. The film
is his directorial debut.
Bingham, a photojournalist, has worked in Africa, the Middle East and Iraq,
and has published her work in the world's major media. She was detained
for eight days by the Iraqi government security services and held in Abu
Ghraib prison, and released in early April 2003. Bingham's first major
written story, on the Iraqi resistance, was published in Vanity Fair in 2004.
