PLAQUE AT SLU TO BE DEDICATED IN MCKINNON'S MEMORY
CANTON - A plaque in memory of Bernard A. ("Bernie")
McKinnon '57, who touched the lives of countless
St. Lawrence University student-athletes in his 30-year
career as a teacher and coach, will be unveiled in the
lobby of Appleton Arena on Saturday, December 8, at
1:30 p.m., just prior to the start of a women's ice
hockey game between St. Lawrence and defending national
champion Minnesota-Duluth.
McKinnon was the captain of the 1956-57 hockey team
and a player on the 1954-55 and 1955-56 NCAA tournament teams.
In addition, between 1966 and his retirement in 1996, he
coached freshman men's soccer, freshman men's lacrosse, varsity
men's lacrosse, freshman men's hockey, varsity men's hockey,
men's tennis, women's tennis, women's ice hockey and women's
soccer and served as an assistant coach for women's lacrosse.
Between the freshman and varsity men's hockey teams and women's
ice hockey, he amassed 282 wins. McKinnon had two NCAA tournament
appearances, a New York State championship and a total of
126 wins in women's soccer and 33 wins and an undefeated season
in 1976 in women's tennis. He was named Division III College
Coach of the Year in New York State women's soccer and was
presented the Joe Burke Award for outstanding contributions to
the sport of women's ice hockey. McKinnon's women's hockey teams
won three ECAC Division III titles and his 1994-95 team made
it to the ECAC Division I women's league semifinals.
He also served as Director of Appleton Arena and was
the first varsity coach of both women's soccer and women's
ice hockey, leading the women's hockey team to three consecutive
playoff appearances in the Division I women's hockey league
and three straight ECAC Division III championships. McKinnon's
women's soccer teams made 14 post-season appearances.
A resident of Canton, McKinnon died on October 22, 2000.
