FORMER U.S. SENATOR MAX CLELAND TO SPEAK AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON – Former United States Senator Max Cleland, who represented Georgia
from 1997 to 2003, will speak and answer questions at a forum to be held on
Monday, March 7, at 8:30 p.m. in Eben Holden at St. Lawrence University.
The event, sponsored by the student organization St. Lawrence University
Democrats, is open to the public, free of charge.
A Democrat, Cleland served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1968, and
lost three limbs in combat in Vietnam. Recipient of the Bronze Star for
Meritorious Service and the Silver Star for Gallantry in Action, Cleland
returned to Georgia, where he was elected to the state senate at the age of
28, serving from 1971 to 1975. In 1977, he became the first Vietnam veteran,
and the youngest person ever, to head the Veteran's Administration, where
he served until 1981, when Cleland became Georgia's youngest-ever secretary
of state. He held that post until 1996, when he was elected to the U.S.
Senate. Cleland was defeated in his run for a second term in 2002, by
Representative Saxby Chambliss, a Republican.
Cleland is author of the books Strong at the Broken Places and
Going for the Max!: 12 Principles for Living Life to the Fullest. He holds
a bachelor's degree from Stetson University and a master's degree in
American history from Emory University.
