Math, Stats Students Publish, Present at Conferences

Jeremy Sylvain ’18, who in May had won the undergraduate portion of the student paper competition at the Ottawa Hockey Analytics Conference, was published as a chapter in Hockey Abstract, a publication of hockey analytics work.

Jeremy worked with Michael Schuckers, Rutherford Professor of Mathematics, professor of statistics and Peterson Quantitative Resource Center Director. His paper was titled “Can We Predict Injuries?”

In July, Maxime Bost-Brown ’17 presented a poster at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Baltimore. Her project involved collecting and analyzing data for the women’s hockey team.

On Oct. 21, Robin Lock, Burry Professor of Statistics, and Schuckers took a group of students to the 2017 RIT Hockey Analytics Conference in Rochester, New York.

There, Jeremy presented a poster with an update of his work, and Schuckers was part of a panel discussion at the conference.
