DRAMA 'MARISOL' TO BE PERFORMED AT ST. LAWRENCE
CANTON – Jose Rivera's award-winning play Marisol will be performed at
St. Lawrence University from Wednesday, March 31, through Saturday,
April 3, at 8 p.m. each evening in Gulick Theatre. Admission is free,
but tickets are required; for information, call 315-229-5192.
Written in "magic realist style," Rivera has created in Marisol
an apocalyptic urban fantasy that urges people to have compassion for
one another. The play imaginatively explores the painful absurdities of
social and environmental crises, as the homeless and displaced join with
angels in a revolution to restore order and vitality to the universe.
The Village Voice described the play as "angry, fearsome, fantastic and
poetically frenzied, without surrendering either its sanity or its
mordant sense of humor….It's a cry from the poet's heart."
The production is directed by Assistant Professor of Speech and
Theatre Rhea Lehman. Costumes and scenery have been designed by faculty
guest artists Robbie Stanton, Indiana University, and Anthony Hardin,
University of Kentucky. Andrew Sullivan serves as assistant director,
and Anne Harrigan is stage manager. Featured actors include Amelia Gomez,
Geoffrey Faiella, Aaron Reynolds, Anya Starykh, Katya Demurenko, Jana
Morgan and Noah Plotkin.
