Piskor Lectureship Awarded To Marina Llorente
CANTON - St. Lawrence University Associate Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures Marina Llorente has been awarded the Frank P. Piskor Faculty Lectureship for 2012. Next year, she will deliver a campus lecture on the topic "Memory and Violence: Critical Conscience in Contemporary Spanish Poetry."
The Piskor Faculty Lectureship was established in 1979 to encourage original and continued research among St. Lawrence faculty members, to recognize and honor distinguished scholarship and to afford the opportunity for faculty to share their learning with the academic community.
With support from the lectureship, Llorente plans to continue on-going research on "the new generation of Spanish social poets using art as a form of resistance against a world which is becoming increasingly dehumanized and forgetful. Despite the long tradition of social poetry in Spain, this latest wave has received little attention from critics."
Specifically, she will focus on the work of five Spanish poets whose works address "permanent war; the recovery of the historical memories of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and the Francoist period (1939-1975); the devastation of the Earth; the exploitation of women's bodies; and the plight of the dispossessed in Spain and throughout the world."
A graduate of the University of Málaga, Spain, Llorente earned a master's degree and the Ph.D. in Spanish literature from the University of Kansas. In 2009, she was awarded the Louis and Frances Maslow Award, given annually to the St. Lawrence University faculty member "who has shown the most interest in and understanding of the education and welfare of the student body as a whole."
