MARATHON ORGANIZERS AT SLU SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

CANTON – Organizers of the May 1 inaugural Canton-St. Lawrence University
Marathon are seeking volunteers from the community to assist with the event,
which includes a marathon, half-marathon and 5K race. The races will be
followed by a day of entertainment on the University's quad, as part of
St. Lawrence's annual Spring Fest celebration.
Volunteers are needed for a variety of duties, including checking
in runners during a race expo on the afternoon and evening of Friday, April
30; setting up and taking down the race staging area; checking in runners
on race day; serving food and drinks before and after the races; handing
out water and sports drinks along the course; presenting runners with medals
after the race; and cleaning up after the events.
Organizers estimate that about 100 volunteers will be needed to
make the events a success. Individuals or groups may volunteer; there
will be 12 aid stations along the course and if a group wishes to volunteer
together, they can be placed as a group at a station. Each aid station
needs to be staffed by at least four people, but more may be assigned if
volunteers wish to stay together as a group.
To volunteer, contact Maureen Williams by phoning 315-229-5646 or
e-mailing mwilliams@stlawu.edu. Volunteers should indicate whether they
are offering assistance as individuals or groups. Hours volunteered will
vary, depending upon the assignment; volunteer assistance will be necessary
for some hours on Friday, April 30, and from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on
Saturday, May 1. As the race date nears, volunteers will be notified of
assignments and hours.
