
Cutline 6/14/04 CANTON-SLU MARATHON BENEFITS ORGANIZATIONS – The planning committee for the Canton-St. Lawrence University Race Weekend, which took place on May 1 and included the Canton-Potsdam Hospital Marathon, the Thelomathesian Society Half-Marathon and the Wellness Initiative 5K, has announced that the inaugural event resulted in the donation of $3,000 to each of its charity partners: Camp Sunshine and St. Lawrence Valley Renewal House. Camp Sunshine is a retreat in Casco, Maine, for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The program is free to all and families come from around the world to attend the camp. The executive director of Camp Sunshine is 1994 St. Lawrence graduate Matthew Hoidal. The St. Lawrence Valley Renewal House for Victims of Family Violence is a non-profit agency providing support and shelter for victims of domestic violence. Renewal House offers 24-hour crisis intervention; individual and group counseling; personal and legal advocacy; children and youth services; safe housing; educational programming; and basic information and referral. The inaugural Canton-St. Lawrence University race weekend found 230 runners and over 100 volunteers taking part in the day. The planning committee would like to thank everyone for their help and participation. The committee would also like to invite area residents to take part in next year's event, which will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2005.
