HISTORICAL FICTION AUTHOR TO LECTURE AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON -- Writer Thomas Mallon, the author of Henry and Clara,
Dewey Defeats Truman and other works of historical fiction, will
give a talk on "Photography and Historical Fiction" on Wednesday,
October 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Herring-Cole at St. Lawrence University.
The event is open to the public, free of charge.
Mallon is also the author of A Book of One's Own: People and
Their Diaries and Stolen Words: Forays into the Origins and Ravages
of Plagiarism. His 1993 book of essays, Rockets and Rodeos and Other
American Spectacles, covers topics as diverse as former U.S. Vice
President Dan Quayle, the Sundance Film Festival, and the vigil before
an execution at the San Quentin penitentiary. Henry and Clara is a
fictional, yet historically accurate, account of the couple who were
with the Lincolns in the box at Ford's Theater when President Lincoln
was shot, and Dewey Defeats Truman explores the 1948 U.S. presidential
campaign through the eyes of the people of Dewey's hometown.
The lecture is sponsored by the Friends of the Owen D. Young
and Launders Libraries at St. Lawrence, in a continuing series on the
role of books and literature in American culture.
