CLIMATE CHANGE IS TOPIC FOR MACKAY LECTURE AT SLU
CANTON - "The Moral and Political Challenges of Climate Change" is the topic for the
2007 Kathryn Fraser Mackay Memorial Lecture at St. Lawrence University, by Dale
Jamieson, professor of environmental studies and philosophy at New York University.
The lecture, on Monday, April 16, at 8 p.m. in Eben Holden on the St. Lawrence
campus, is open to the public, free of charge.
St. Lawrence Associate Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Outdoor Studies
Program Baylor L. Johnson and Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy J. Robert
Loftis will offer responses following the lecture.
Jamieson is a leading figure in environmental ethics and bioethics. His most recent
book, Morality's Progress: Essays on Humans, Other Animals, and the Rest of Nature
(Oxford, 2002), covers questions concerning the morality of our relationships
to other animals and to nature, setting a "challenging, controversial agenda for
the future." He is also the editor or co-editor of seven books, including A
Companion to Environmental Philosophy (Blackwell, 2001) and Singer and His
Critics (Blackwell, 1999), named by Choice as one of the outstanding academic
books of 1999.
The Mackay Memorial Lecture was established in memory of Kathryn Fraser Mackay '77
by her family, to honor her interests and spirit. Traditionally, coordination of
the lectures alternates between the departments of philosophy and religious studies.
