'Ethics Of Cohabitation' Topic For SLU's Mackay Lecture
CANTON - The 2011 Mackay Lecture at St. Lawrence University will be given by Eduardo Mendieta, professor of philosophy at Stony Brook University, on the topic "To Come to the World: The Ethics of Cohabitation." The lecture, open to the public free of charge, is on Tuesday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in the Common Room of Sykes Residence Hall.
Mendieta will discuss the ramifications of Arizona's Senate Bill 1070, now being contested by a number of civil rights organizations that view it as unconstitutional. He states that the bill "makes evident the dependence of law on morality, and above all of citizenship's dependence on an ethics of cohabitation." The overall aim of the lecture is to shed some light on the human condition and how a politics of exclusion, vilification and criminalization of immigrants is a violation of the basic requirements of human beings.
A professor at Stony Brook since 2001, Mendieta has focused research on global ethics, discourse ethics, critical theory, theories of modernity, post-modernity, post-colonialism and Latin American philosophy.
The Mackay Memorial Lecture was established in memory of Kathryn Fraser Mackay '77 by
her family, to honor her interests and spirit. Traditionally, coordination of the
lectures alternates between the departments of philosophy and religious studies.
