SLU LECTURE FOCUSES ON SCIENCE & PHILOSOPHY

CANTON -- The first of two Kathryn Fraser Mackay Memorial Lectures
will be given at St. Lawrence University on Monday, April 9, at 4 p.m.
in Hepburn Auditorium, by Bas van Fraassen, McCosh Professor of Philosophy
at Princeton University. He will speak on "Scientific Revolution/Conversion
as a Philosophical Problem." The event is open to the public, free of charge.
van Fraassen is the author of An Introduction to the Philosophy of
Time and Space; The Scientific Image and Quantum Mechanics: An Empiricist View,
among many other books, articles and short-stories.
In his talk, van Fraassen will examine the "enormous upheaval" that
has taken place in the field of physics over the past 50 years, and the
area's "radical paradigm shifts." He explores how the changes could be
considered rational, as well as how scientists could "view ourselves as
having gone through a rational transition, if that is how it was."
