SLU GRAD TO GIVE MACKAY LECTURE
CANTON - The Reverend Richard S. Gilbert, a 1958 graduate of St. Lawrence University and
1961 graduate of its Theology School, will give the 2006 Kathryn Fraser Mackay Memorial
Lecture, titled "Through the Eye of a Needle: Is Economic Justice an Oxymoron?," on
Tuesday, February 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Eben Holden Hall on campus. The event, part of the
University's Sesquicentennial celebration, is open to the public, free of charge.
Gilbert is retired, after serving as a Unitarian Universalist minister for 44 years.
He is the author of numerous works on ethics, theology and justice, including The
Prophetic Imperative, How Much Do We Deserve? and Building Your Own Theology.
Among his awards is the St. Lawrence University Sol Feinstone Award for Humanitarian
Service (1998). Gilbert has been active in social justice work, both within the
Unitarian Universalist Church and the broader community.
The Mackay Memorial Lecture was established in memory of Kathryn Fraser Mackay '77 by
her family, to honor her interests and spirit. Traditionally, coordination of the
lectures alternates between the departments of philosophy and religious studies.
