A List 9/24/01 SLU BUILDS SANDY MACALLASTER SOCCER FIELD CANTON - St. Lawrence University has constructed and will dedicate next fall the Sandy MacAllaster Soccer Field, a new athletic facility. It is being used for the current season, with the first games played there on September 5. The field is named to honor the memory of Archie F. (Sandy) MacAllaster III, a 1978 graduate of the University who was killed in an automobile accident in 1979. He was the son of Trustee Emeritus Archie F. MacAllaster II '50 and Barbara Torrey MacAllaster '51, and nephew of Trustee David L. Torrey '53 and William A. Torrey Sr. '57. His grandfather, the late Arthur S. Torrey '24, was chairman of the University's Board of Trustees from 1968 to 1978; the women's soccer practice field, Arthur Torrey Field, is named in his honor. The total cost of the new field and pressbox total some $675,000. Significant support was given for the project by Archie and Barbara Torrey MacAllaster, David Torrey and William Torrey. In addition, Dennis and Penney Carruth and their family contributed to the project. Gifts will continue to be sought to complete the $1.2 million total project, to include permanent fencing, bleacher seating and lighting. The field is positioned directly behind Newell Field House, to provide for ready access to locker and training space, as well as protection from weather. The fields have been landscaped to include built-in drainage, and a "bowl" has been created to protect soccer players from winds and to allow spectators to look slightly down at the players, as spectators do in Appleton Hockey Arena, allowing for improved viewing. "We are very grateful to the MacAllaster and Torrey families for their gifts, making the construction of Sandy MacAllaster Field possible, and for their longstanding and generous support of St. Lawrence University," said President Daniel F. Sullivan. "The new facility is a wonderful addition to our offerings in athletics and recreation." Sandy MacAllaster starred in varsity soccer while a student at St. Lawrence, as a goalie, and was elected to the All-ICAC soccer team. Graduating with a degree in history, he was also a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and a pitcher on the baseball team. MacAllaster studied in London and was a resident assistant; at the time of his death, he was working for Dean, Witter and Reynolds Inc. in Santa Barbara, California.-30- Back To News Releases Back to St. Lawrence Homepage
