LAURENTIAN SINGERS OFFER SPRING CONCERT AT SLU

CANTON -- The Laurentian Singers will present their spring-semester
home concert on Saturday, March 24, at 8 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial
Chapel on campus. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
The ensemble spent spring break week touring in Georgia. The
Singers are directed by Barry Torres; Barbara Phillips-Farley is the
accompanist.
The program will feature the work of two American composers,
George Gershwin and Aaron Copland, with performances of "I Got Rhythm"
and "Someone To Watch Over Me" by Gershwin, plus selections from
Copland's "Old American Songs." Of special interest will be music
from Puerto Rico that the Singers brought back with them from their
2000 spring tour, as well as communal songs from Kenya accompanied
by drumming and traditional dance movements. The ensemble will also
sing "scat" versions of "Blue Monk" by Thelonius Monk and Mozart's
"Overture to The Marriage of Figaro." Sacred music by Byrd,
Palestrina, Gounod and Britten rounds out the program.
The Laurentian Singers are a coed group of 24 undergraduate
students who represent a wide variety of academic majors and interests.
One of the Singers' activities is an annual tour during spring break;
recent destinations have included Puerto Rico, Boston, Italy, Florida
and Washington, D.C. During this year's Georgia tour, they performed
for audiences and at schools in Savannah, Milledgeville, Macon and
Atlanta.
