Laurentian Singers' Set Christmas Concerts Carol Sings

CANTON - The Laurentian Singers Christmas Concert and Carol Sing will take place on Friday, December 5 at 8 p.m. at the Russell Opera House and Saturday, December 6, at 2 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel on campus. Both are open to the public, free of charge.

"A Medieval Modern Christmas" is directed by Barry Torres; Barbara Phillips-Farley is accompanist. Harpist Karlinda Caldicott is guest artist.

The Singers will present 14th- and 15th-century English carols and 20th-century music inspired by these carols. Benjamin Britten's beloved classic "A Ceremony of Carols" will be sung by the Laurentian women, with Caldicott. The Laurentian men open the concert with renditions of medieval carols, including the famous Angelus ad virginem referred to in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The Singers will close ranks to round out the program with two well-known but contrasting early carols and their respective contemporary settings: "Lo, how a rose 'ere blooming" and "Gaudete." Following the formal program, the Laurentian Singers invite the audience to join in a carol-sing of seasonal favorites.

Former principal harpist with the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Caldicott has appeared as a soloist with various orchestras in upstate New York.

The Laurentian Singers, a select coeducational choir, celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2006. The group has won wide acclaim since its founding. In addition to their many performances on campus and in the community, the ensemble has toured extensively.
